Aim Along Potting Line

Why Practice This Drill

Almost all new snooker players make the mistake of “picking a spot on the object ball“, which is what you’d naturally think is the correct way of aiming. It’s not. All good players “aim along the potting line“.

Pick A Game

Beginner: Complete 10 shots

Club player: Complete 20 shots

Pro: Complete 20 shots and pot them all. Start over if you miss.

Aim Along Potting Line Steps

Step 1: Pledge

Place hand on chin and pledge: “I will never aim for a specific point on the object ball.” You may be tempted to aim at a specific spot because it’s a natural thing to do. Resist the temptation! And proceed quickly to step two before you get tempted.

Step 2: Half Ball Set-up

Place red ball on blue spot, and the white in position to play a half ball shot.

Step 3: Use Cue To Find Line

To help find the line of the shot, stand behind the red and raise the cue over the red and pocket to sight the line. This is a really good pre-shot routine for when playing a match.

Step 4: Pre-shot Routine

Each time you play the half ball shot, follow step 3 as the pre-shot routine.
